Watch first
What this is
When we are "fused" with a thought, it feels like the absolute truth and we get carried away by it. Defusion is the opposite: gently stepping back to watch a thought as just a passing mental event — a leaf on a stream, a cloud in the sky. The thought may still be there, but it loses its grip. This practice lets you place each thought onto something drifting and simply watch it float by.
Benefits
Creates Distance
Watch thoughts pass instead of being swept away
Decentering
Thoughts become events, not facts
Less Struggle
No fighting — just letting them drift
The Observer Self
You are the watcher, steady behind the thoughts
⚠ Precautions
- A self-help ACT cognitive defusion exercise, not therapy or diagnosis.
- Defusion is about distance from thoughts, not suppressing them.
- If thoughts are overwhelming or constant, please see a professional.
- If you ever feel unsafe, pause and reach a helpline.
