Translations

English Translation

The soldiers that retreated from the battlefield did not come back, similar to rivers that flow into the sea and lose their identity. This highlights the consequences of fleeing from confrontation.

Commentary

Context

This shloka conveys the harsh reality of war and the dire consequences of retreating from the battlefield, emphasized in the Drona Parva.

Meaning

The metaphor of rivers emphasizes permanence; once a soldier withdraws from the fight, they often lose their chance at redemption and honor.

Application

This verse urges us to face our challenges boldly and not retreat, for backing down may lead to long-lasting regret and loss of identity in our pursuits.
