Mahabharata Udyoga Parva – किं तस्य तपसा राज्ञः किं च तस्याध्वरैर अपि

किं तस्य तपसा राज्ञः किं च तस्याध्वरैर अपि
अपालिताः परजा यस्य सर्वा धर्मविनाकृताः

No matter how much a king venerates rituals or penance, if the subjects are neglected, they shall remain devoid of Dharma.

English Translation

What good are the penances and sacrifices of a king if his subjects are unprotected? They then remain devoid of righteousness.

हिंदी अनुवाद

यदि राजा के अनुयायी सुरक्षित नहीं हैं तो उसकी तपस्या और यज्ञ का क्या लाभ? तब वे सभी धर्महीन रह जाते हैं।

Commentary

Context

This shloka urges rulers to focus their efforts on the welfare of their subjects rather than on personal piety alone.

Meaning

True righteousness cannot exist without the protection and good governance of the people.

Leaders must prioritize their duties towards their subjects to create a just and morally upright society.
